In today’s fast-paced, digitally driven world, modern Indians are increasingly turning to their pets for emotional balance and mental wellness. A recent survey highlights how pets are not only improving their owners’ emotional well-being but also reshaping their digital habits, sleep patterns, and social interactions.
It’s well-known that having a pet can do wonders for mental health—helping to reduce stress, anxiety, and loneliness. Interaction with pets has been proven to lower cortisol (the stress hormone) and boost oxytocin, the so-called “love hormone,” creating a calming effect.
For today’s pet parents, the benefits go even further. A joint survey by Mars Petcare and Calm India reveals that pets are helping owners maintain healthier daily routines and even cut down on screen time.
According to the survey:
57% of Indian pet parents say they spend less time on social media, choosing to interact with their pets instead.
An impressive 92% claim their pets help them unplug from screens entirely, providing a much-needed break from constant digital exposure.
79% of Indian pet owners also report better sleep quality, thanks to the calming presence of their pets—compared to 59% globally. Pets offer comfort, a sense of security, and help ease anxiety at bedtime.
Pets are also making their owners more socially connected. Nearly 70% of Indian pet parents say their pets have improved their social lives, often through shared activities with other pet lovers. One such story comes from Aparna, a law student from Ghaziabad, who says her poodle, Cheddar, has made her and her family local celebrities in their community. Thanks to Cheddar, they attend pet parties and regularly interact with fellow pet owners.
In addition, 61% of pet parents are encouraged to go outdoors for walks and fresh air, purely due to their pets' needs.
Pets also play a key role in promoting work-life balance. About 93% of Indian pet parents say that their pets encourage them to take breaks from work or daily chores—leading to more mindful and balanced routines.
While pets are proving to be emotional anchors, India is facing a concerning rise in pet abandonment. As more couples adopt a DINK (Dual Income, No Kids) lifestyle and choose pets over children, many are unable or unwilling to continue their responsibilities.
A 2024 report revealed that:
38% of respondents were considering giving up their pet dogs
57% were thinking about abandoning their cats
This troubling trend underscores the need to not only celebrate the joy pets bring but also to acknowledge the long-term commitment that comes with being a responsible pet parent.
