Trump Issues 50-Day Ultimatum to Russia Over Ukraine War: Threatens 100% Tariff, Sanctions on Oil Trade

U.S. President Donald Trump has issued a strong warning to Russia, giving it a 50-day deadline to broker a peace deal with Ukraine or face 100% tariffs and sweeping sanctions on its oil exports and trade partners.

Speaking during a high-level meeting with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte at the White House, Trump made it clear that time is running out for Moscow to halt its military campaign in Ukraine.

“I’m very unhappy with Russia. We’re going to do very severe tariffs—about 100%—if there’s no peace deal in 50 days,” Trump said.

Tariffs and Sanctions in the Pipeline

Trump’s warning includes the imposition of “secondary tariffs,” targeting not just Russia but also nations purchasing Russian oil—primarily China and India. While specific details remain unclear, U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick confirmed that both tariffs and sanctions are on the table.

“Sanctions and tariffs are both tools in the president’s toolbox. He can do either one,” Lutnick stated.

A senior White House official added that if a ceasefire agreement is not signed by early September, Russia will face both tariffs and secondary sanctions.

This would mark a significant shift in Western sanctions policy, which until now has avoided penalizing countries that continue buying Russian oil—allowing Russia to earn substantial revenues during the three-year-long war.

Russian Markets React

Surprisingly, the announcement provided a momentary lift for Russia’s financial markets. The ruble recovered from earlier losses, and stock indices rose, as investors viewed the 50-day grace period as a window of opportunity for diplomacy.
